LSAT
The LSAT (Lightweight Small Arms Technologies) program is funded by the U.S. Joint Service Small Arms Program and led by the AAI Corporation, and is the successor to the cancelled OICW development spirals and the Heckler & Koch XM8. The main objectives of the program are to reduce the weight of weapons and ammunition carried by soldiers by 35 percent, improve ergonomics and logistics, and reduce training and maintenance time.
The program consisted of a light machine gun and an assault rifle, but more recently 7.62mm and 6.5mm general-purpose machine gun variants have also been developed as potential replacements for the M240L.
