AN/M8 HC smoke grenade
The AN/M8 smoke grenade appears in the following films and video games used by the following actors:
AN/M8 Smoke Grenade
Standard white smoke grenade with a 1.2-2.0 second fuze, using hexachloroethane-zinc (HC) filler, producing a smoke screen for 105-150 seconds depending on weather conditions. Warnings issued with the grenade state it is not to be used in enclosed spaces unless soldiers are wearing gas masks, due to producing "harmful hydrochloric fumes." The actual dangerous chemical produced is zinc chloride, which is a skin irritant, can cause serious respiratory problems, and displaces oxygen in enclosed spaces. The steel grenade casing also becomes very hot when the grenade is producing smoke, to the point it can cause fires.
As a result of this, any AN/M8 appearing in a live-action production is likely a replica or empty shell dispensing a much more actor-friendly smoke mixture.
