Model 17 Stielhandgranate "Potato Masher" high-explosive fragmentation hand grenade

The Model 17 Stielhandgrante was the last stick grenade developed and used by German forces and the armies of Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire during World War One. The difference to the Model 16 was that the M17 had a slender warhead without lid. After the war this grenade was used by the Reichswehr until it was replaced in 1924 by the Model 24, which removed the star-shaped grip added to the base of the end cap and deleted the belt clip on the head. Several countries copied this type like Bulgaria and Finland (Varsikranaatti M32).
