The Heckler & Koch HK94 was the civilian semiautomatic version of the famous MP5 Submachine gun (with the 'legal' 16" carbine barrel).  Imported in the late 1970s to late 1980s (it's importation banned by the infamous BATF re-interpretation of the "Sporting Clause" of GCA-68 in 1989), many more H94s were imported into the country than factory original MP5s during that time period.  The fact that (in 1985 dollars) the HK94 was $600 and the full auto MP5 was about $2400, it was cheaper to convert the semiauto gun and register it as a Title II weapon.  Also most of the full auto MP5s coming into the country were slated for Law Enforcement and Military sales.

Heckler & Koch MP5-N, an A2 model with a Navy Trigger Group

The first MP5s looked very different than the MP5s that Movie and television viewers have become accustomed to. Since the early models were rarely (if ever) seen outside of Europe and not manufactured in the same numbers as the common variants (starting with the A2), this page begins with the MP5A2 model, since that is the earliest model MP5 that would be seen in World Cinema.

Also many MP5A2s (and A3s) were retrofitted with ambidextrous Navy lower trigger groups (both in the real world and Movie armories) and many times these MP5N models are confused with the newer factory issued MP5A4s and MP5A5s. Movie viewers should note whether or not the lower trigger group has three firing positions (which indicates it is a Navy Lower group upgrade) versus four firing positions (which indicates it is a factory A4 or A5 variant).

The "Fake MP5", the Heckler & Koch HK94 Converted to full auto fire, shortened barrel and added third firing position on trigger pack - 9mm. This version was used in many films during the 1980s and 1990s.

The fact that (in 1985 dollars) the HK94 was $600 and the full auto MP5 was about $1600, it was cheaper to convert the semiauto gun and register it as a Title II weapon. Also most of the full auto MP5s coming into the country were slated for Law Enforcement and Military sales.

Note: In some films of the 1980's and 1990's, the HK94 is "chopped and converted", to look like the MP5A3.

Film

  • Terrorists and Bruce Willis as Detective John McClaine in Die Hard (Chopped and Converted to look like MP5A3s.)
  • Mitchell Ryan as General Peter McAllister and Mel Gibson as Detective Martin Riggs in Lethal Weapon (also L.A.P.D. SWAT in a deleted scene) (Chopped and Converted to look like MP5A3s.)
  • L.A.P.D SWAT Officers, Keanu Reeves as Jack Traven, and Jeff Daniels as Harry Temple in Speed (Chopped and Converted to look like MP5A3s and MP5A2s.)

Television

  • Seen in the hands of Randall Flagg's henchmen in Las Vegas in The Stand

Heckler & Koch MP5K

Note: Some MP5Ks seen in film are modified SP89s that are fitted with a forward handgrip and converted to full auto.

A "faux" Heckler & Koch MP5K - this is an original SP89 pistol converted to full auto fire by a Class III armorer. Giveaways are the lack of a paddle magazine release. This version was also used in movies between 1989 and the late 1990s when factory original MP5Ks were not available - 9mm

Heckler & Koch MP5K - version with SEF Plastic Trigger Pack - 9mm. This is a very well worn Motion picture weapon

Heckler & Koch MP5KN - updated with the Navy Trigger Group. The Navy trigger group dates to 1985, the MP5K-PDW to 1991. The MP5K is available in the newer MP5KN, MP5KA4, and MP5KA5 configurations, which all have the ambidextrous trigger group. Another 'well used' actual movie blank firing gun.

MP5K-PDW with extended barrel (with 3 lugs & folding stock

The PDW (Personal Defense Weapon) was an upgrade to the MP5K, adding a synthetic folding stock to create a stable firing platform for more accurate fire, and extended the barrel and put on three lugs to quick attach flash hiders or suppressors.
