The weapons used in this movie are:

Adler-Jager AP-74

Peter (Ken Foree) aims his Adler-Jager AP-74 (standing in for a real SP1 or M16). The AP-74 was a .22lr M16 clone that had characteristics of both the SP1 and M16A1. - 22LR

The original M16, the first version, firing in a 20-round magazine, adopted in large numbers by the U.S. Army in Vietnam. This has the original 3-prong flash hider. It would later be replaced by the upgraded M16A1 - 5.56mm
  • Used by all SWAT members, in particular, the characters of Peter (Ken Foree) and Roger (Scott H. Reiniger) but eventually discarded after raiding the gun store. In one shot, when Peter is unloading his weapon after shooting the zombie kids, we can see the tiny .22lr magazine. The Adler-Jager AP-74 is an inexpensive .22 AR15 clone (that was actually pretty close to an SP1 and much better looking than the .22 M16 clone made by Armscor). The guns were pretty much 'mime' fired, with only the sound effect and blood squibs to indicate that the rifle was fired.

The Armorers for the movie was an East Coast outfit called "The Plastics Factory", however other information on them are unavailable.

The actual company was Italian, and the gun was manufactered by ARMI Jager, not Adler. Also, Mitchell Arms imported them later on, and tried to make A2 variants. I've owned 2. One back in the 80's with walnut stocks, and I currently have one that doesn't function and was given to me. _SBG File:Http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o202/saltydog saltydog/jaqger74 for web.jpg

Ruger Single Six

A Colt Peacemaker single action type revolver is used by one of the survivors.

Roger appears to be loading this gun with .22 rounds, so that would mean it is most likely a Single Six. It could still be a Peacemaker, but Roger loaded it with blank rounds.

Ruger Blackhawk

Additional Info: Steven's pistol, found in the desk of the maintenance office, is certainly either a Ruger Blackhawk or a Ruger Single Six. The photo above, though it shows a single action revolver, is not a Ruger Blackhawk or a single six which has a different profile from what is portrayed above. -Yojimbo

There I changed the image. - Jcordell

Derringer pistol

Peter(Ken Foree) contemplates committing suicide with this gun until he decides to go with Fran (Galen Ross) to help protect her and her unborn baby.

As with many other guns in this film it appears to be a .22 also.

Savage 99 rifle

Peter (Ken Foree) takes a scoped Savage 99 lever action rifle, possibly in 300 Savage, from the gun store for his personal use. He later uses it against the bikers when they invade the mall. The Savage 99 was chambered ,at various times, for .300 Savage, .308 Winchester, .243 Winchester,.358 Winchester, 250-3000 Savage, .22 High Power and .303 Savage (there were other calibers but these were the most common) during the 100 odd years that it was manufactured.

Smith & Wesson Model 36

While waiting for Roger to return as a zombie Peter appears to be holding a nickle plated S&W Model 36. There is a possibility that it is the stainless steel Model 60 as well.

Colt Python

During the famous gunstore sequence there is a brief glimpse of a Colt Python in the display case. It is taken but never used.

Thompson M1928A1

One of the bikers who invade the mall is using a Thompson submachine gun with the fifty round drum magazine and the forward pistol grip.Possibly that biker is played by Tom Savini, special effect wizard on the movie. Nah,Tom Savini played "Blades", the biker with the machete, cutlass, and several other knives(including a switchblade comb!).

CORRECTION: The Thompson wielding biker was played by Larry Varia, and was not Tom Savini as was pointed out. Larry Varia recently passed away (2008) and now that this entry has been corrected perhaps his soul can now rest in peace. -Yojimbo

Hopefully Mr. Varia's spirit will forgive me. By the way did he get to keep that Thompson after filming wrapped? Just kidding. - Jcordell

As of December 2008, Thompson used by Varia in DOTD was in still in the posession of Gary Zeller, special effects coordinator for DOTD 1978. Would have been nice, though, if it had been buried with him! :) -Yojimbo

Yes it would have been. - Jcordell

The bikers name is actually Larry Vaira. -SBG

Unidentifed Rifle

During the sequence when Roger and Peter are venturing forth from the safety of the mall to get the trucks Fran is providing cover fire from the roof of the mall with a rifle. It appears to be a 22 caliber rifle based on the bore size.

It appears to be a Marlin model 25 bolt action .22. I'd have to watch again to make sure. -SBG
