Ed O'Neill is an American actor best known to television audiences for his portrayal of the boorish, misogynistic Al Bundy in the long-running television comedy series Married with Children, despite having had a long career playing 'hard types' in many films and television series. In the years during the run of Married with Children, O'Neill found it hard to get cast in any role that was not comedy-related. In fact, after filming the role of a US Naval officer at a court martial in the 1991 film Flight of the Intruder, his role had to be recast after disastrous test screenings where his appearance elicited unwanted laughter (the scene was eventually re-shot with actor Fred Dalton Thompson). When the run of Married with Children ended in 1997, O'Neill was able to appear in more serious roles, notably in several films directed by friend David Mamet and as Lt. Joe Friday in the 2003 remake of the series Dragnet before returning to television comedy in the series Modern Family. O'Neill is also a Brazilian Ju Jitsu blackbelt and had been signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, before being let go in 1969.
