Richard III is the 1995 film adaptation of the Shakespeare play starring Ian McKellen as the title character. Directed by Richard Loncraine, the film co-stars Annette Bening, Kristin Scott Thomas, Jim Broadbent, Robert Downey, Jr., and Nigel Hawthorne. Though the story remains faithful to Shakespeare's play about the ambitious and twisted Richard of Gloucester, the film's setting is an alternate 1930's Britain as Richard's evil plans to gain control of the English throne paralleled the rise of fascism in Germany and Italy under the rule of Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini, respectively. In keeping with the period of the film, the majority of the weapons and vehicles seen are somewhat consistent with the actual time period in history. The film was based on a successful stage version which also starred McKellen.
The following weapons were used in the film Richard III:
Pistols
Mauser C96
In both the opening and closing scenes, Richard of Gloucester's (Ian McKellen) weapon of choice is a "Broomhandle" Mauser pistol.
Colt M1911A1 pistol
Prince Edward (Christopher Bowen) grabs a Colt 1911 pistol when the headquarters comes under attack, and is still trying to chamber it when Richard shoots him down. Likewise, the Earl of Richmond (Dominic West) holds one on Richard in the final confrontation.
Submachine Guns
Bergmann MP18
In the opening scene and in the final battle, several of Richard's soldiers wield Bergmann MP18 submachine guns while storming King Henry's headquarters at Tewkesbury.
MP40
King Henry's soldiers carry MP40s when trying to defend themselves against Richard's attack.
MP41
Some of Richard's guards are armed with the MP41.
Rifles
Browning Automatic Rifle
Lee-Enfield No.1 MkIII* rifle
The Lee-Enfield No.1 MkIII* rifle is seen in the hands of the vast majority of British soldiers throughout the film. This was the main battle rifle of British and Commonwealth forces during the First World War, introduced in 1907 it has seen action throughout the 20th century.
Enfield Pattern 1914 rifle
Pattern 1914 Enfield rifles were seen in the hands of many of Richmond's soldiers when they fight Richard's army towards the end of the film.
Machine Guns
Lewis machine gun
When his army comes under attack by Lord Stanley's air forces, Richard (Ian McKellen) seizes a vehicle mounted Lewis machine gun and tries to shoot down one of the incoming fighters.
Browning M1917 machine gun
A Browning M1917 machine gun (mocked up to look like either a Maxim '08 or a Vickers machine gun) is mounted on Richard's scout car during the final battle.
Browning M2 heavy machine gun
During the final battle scene, Richmond (Dominic West) fires a Browning M2 heavy machine gun from the back of a jeep, while attacking Richard's forces.
