Godzilla (1954) (original title Gojira) was the first in a long line of movies about the radiation-spewing lizard and arguably the best of the bunch. Directed by Ishirô Honda and starring Akira Takarada, Momoko Kôchi, Akihiko Hirata, Takashi Shimura, and Fuyuki Murakami, the original film was a thinly veiled critique of the incendiary and atomic bombings of Japan during the Pacific War. The film was released in the United States in 1956, heavily edited to remove most of its references to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, under the title, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and starred Raymond Burr. It was subsequently remade by director Roland Emmerich (Godzilla (1998)) and another version by director Gareth Edwards is scheduled for release in 2014.
An ancient sea monster is awakened from its hibernation by an H-bomb test and wreaks havoc on Tokyo.
