This, I assume, is to ensure he knows her location and that she doesn't surprise him while he walks around with a loaded gun. Home Defense Procedure
During the home defense scene, Wigand sits his daughter down at a table in the basement and has her draw a picture while he investigates the outside of the house. This, I assume, is to ensure he knows her location and that she doesn't surprise him while he walks around with a loaded gun.
