Lawless is a 2012 gangster film directed by John Hillcoat (The Road) based on the true story of a family of bootleggers (portrayed by Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, and Jason Clarke) who decide to fight back against a corrupt politician and his agent. The film is set in Franklin County, Virginia in 1931, late in the Prohibition era.
The film's cast includes Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce, and Gary Oldman. It was based on the book The Wettest County in the World, written by Matt Bondurant, grandson of Jack.
Handguns
Colt Detective Special
Forrest Bondurant (Tom Hardy) carries a Colt Detective Special throughout the film. Jack Bondurant (Shia LaBeouf) also handles Forrest's revolver, posing with it in photographs and taking it during the final shootout.
Colt Detective Special (Nickel)
Fellow bootlegger Jimmy Turner (Bruce McKinnon) carries a nickel Colt Detective Special.
Colt New Service
Forrest Bondurant (Tom Hardy) fires a nickel Colt New Service during the bridge shootout. This was previously identified as a Police Positive but based on the bore size and the front sight, it is in fact a New Service.
Colt Official Police
Franklin County deputies Henry Abshire (Lew Temple) and Jeff Richards (Marcus Hester) are both armed with Colt Official Police revolvers. Several law enforcement officers including Sheriff Hodges (Bill Camp) are also armed with Colt Official Police revolvers. Banner's driver Gummy Walsh (Noah Taylor) also carries one.
Iver Johnson DA Safety Hammerless
Jack Bondurant (Shia LaBeouf) carries a hammerless .32-caliber Iver Johnson DA Safety Hammerless with a 2" barrel as his main handgun, tucked into his waistband.
M1911A1
One of the officers uses an M1911A1 during the bridge shootout. One of Banner's men also carries an M1911A1.
Single Action Army Cavalry
One of the drunken thugs in the Blackwater station carries a Single Action Army Cavalry Model with a 7.5" barrel. Cricket Pate (Dane DeHaan) picks it up off of the ground and uses it to subdue the man. In the book, it was an older station assistant named Hal who had grabbed the SAA.
Smith & Wesson Model 10 (Nickel)
Special Agent Charlie Rakes (Guy Pearce) carries a Smith & Wesson Model 10 with a nickel finish in a black leather belt holster on his right side.
Webley .38 Mk IV
Howard Bondurant's (Jason Clarke) sidearm of choice in the film is a Webley .38 Mk IV, seen during the opening sequence in 1918 and later during the bridge shootout. Jack (Shia LeBeouf) and Cricket Pate (Dane DeHaan) also pose with the revolver on Jack's car. This was previously identified as a .455 Webley Mk VI, but it can be determined to be a Mk IV based on the front sight and other details.
Shotguns
Colt Model 1878 Coach Gun
Charley Rakes (Guy Pearce) carries a Colt Model 1878 Coach Gun when raiding Cricket Pate's still. Later, Jack Bondurant (Shia LaBeouf) takes his own when confronting Rakes. Jack is seen holding what appears to be a Colt Model 1878 Coach Gun.
Stoeger Coach Gun
Jack Bondurant (Shia LaBeouf) retrieves a hammerless Stoeger double-barreled shotgun from the brothers' whiskey still.
Winchester Model 1897 Trench
Special Agent Charlie Rakes (Guy Pearce) uses a Winchester Model 1897 "Trench Gun". Floyd Banner also keeps at least one in his arsenal, although he never uses it during the film.
Winchester Model 1912 Riot Gun
Several agents who accompany Rakes on a raid wield the Winchester Model 1912 Riot Gun. The Winchester also used during the bridge shootout.
Winchester Model 1912
The Winchester Model 1912 is seen in hands of Cricket Pate (Dane DeHaan), Forrest Bondurant (Tom Hardy), and Howard Bondurant (Jason Clarke).
Submachine Guns
M1928 Thompson
A mobster named Floyd Banner (Gary Oldman) wields an M1928 Thompson.
Rifles
unidentified bolt-action rifle
During the opening flashback, set in 1918, eight-year-old Jack Bondurant handles a bolt-action rifle when his brothers try to get him to kill a pig. In this book, this was declared to be a .22-caliber.
Model 1896 Krag-Jorgensen Carbine
A Krag-Jorgensen M1896 Carbine is used by a bootlegger during the bridge shootout. In the picture it is mostly obscured by the back of the truck.
Stevens Crackshot
What appears to be a .22 rimfire Stevens Crackshot is carried by a bootlegger during the bridge shootout.
Winchester Model 62
A bootlegger can be seen with a Winchester Model 62 pump action rifle.
