The Interpreter is a 2005 thriller starring Nicole Kidman as a UN interpreter who overhears a possible assassination plot against the dictator of the fictional African country of Matobo. The movie was the first feature to ever film scenes in the actual UN General Assembly in New York City. It also was the final film directed by Sydney Pollack(Three Days of the Condor, The Yakuza, The Firm) .

The SIG-Sauer P229 is the main sidearm carried by the US Secret Service in the film, including USSS Agent Tobin Keller (Sean Penn) and USSS Agent Dot Woods (Catherine Keener).

Matobo dictator Edmond Zuwanie (Earl Cameron) carries a custom stainless steel M1911A1 with ivory grips as the weapon he carries with him at all times. Silvia Broome (Nicole Kidman) later takes it from him and points it at his head.
