The Colt 1849 Pocket is in the series of several commercially sold pocket Colts including the Colt 1862 Police Pocket and the Colt Navy Pocket models. It most closely relates to the Baby Dragoon pistol. When the 1849 was first built, it very closely resembled the "Wells Fargo" Baby Dragoon with the lack of a loading lever. Once the loading lever was added to the design, this pistol become very popular as a hidden backup gun. The gun was great as a pocket pistol because of its size and its 5 shot capacity of .31 caliber balls. While it had little stopping power, it was better than being empty handed in a fight. The legendary Will Bill Hickock was believed to had carried one at some point as a backup pistol. | |||
