Revision as of 18:41, 1 December 2011
The following guns were used in the television show Mythbusters. Since many Mythbusters episodes features guns, this list is far from complete.
Handguns
M1911A1
Both Adam and Jaimie use a M1911A1 in Wheel of Mythfortune (S9E21) to test Whether action movie shooting stances actually work. Jaimie describes it as a "very common gun worldwide."
Colt Single Action Army
- To test the myth of whether a hat could be shot off someones head, they used a Colt Single Action Army with a nickel finish. They also used one to test whether a silver bullet was more effective than lead. (Both proved "busted")
.357 Magnum
Used in shooting through a lock.
Im pretty sure it was a colt king cobra-Doomsayer64
Ruger Mk II
This pistol is seen in Mythbusters episode 85 Hot Bullets.
Kimber 1911
- A Kimber 1911 pistol is used to test and see if various things are bullet proof, mounted on a hands free rig for maximum accuracy. Referred as a .45 in most gun tests.
Glock 22
- To test the "reversed bullet" myth in which a criminal fired his handgun at a police officer and the bullet lodged backwards in his service revolver, the Adam and Jamie hooked up a Glock 22 to a rig and fired it at the revolver, impressed that the round did in fact lodge in the cylinder. One was also shot by Adam at several police badges to test and see if any were bullet proof, as well as a few other items for the same test.
Colt Police Positive
- A Colt Police Positive was on the receiving end of the "reversed bullet" myth, in which they ruined a perfectly good revolver by shooting it. The crew claimed the 9mm bullet was larger than the .38 caliber chamber, yet 9mm and .38 are both .38 caliber in diameter.
- The two bullets are virtually identical in diameter normally, however all bullets expand slightly after being fired. Therefore, the discharged 9mm round may have been just slightly larger than the revolver cylinder.
The bullets used in a 9mm is .355 inch in diameter , a .38 is .357 inch. However, the Glock model 22 does not fire 9mm rounds without modifying the pistol. It fires .40 caliber, which is, in fact, larger than .38 caliber, even before expansion from firing.
Smith & Wesson SW99
- Season 6, episode 1 "James Bond Special 1": Kari tries to pierce a propane tank with a Smith & Wesson SW99 - and fails. They misidentify it as a Walther, the model the SW99 is based upon.
SIG-Sauer P239
Used in the Bullets Fired Underwater myth in the Myths Reopened episode, specifically called out by Grant.
SIG-Sauer P226
The SIG-Sauer P226 is used in the episode "Blow Your Own Sail" (5/11/2011) to test the myth of Hollywood sound effects, testing a 9mm pistol suppressed and un-suppressed. It is a newer P226R model with a tan accents. It may be a P226 Combat. In the HD broadcast the "P226" marking on the handle can be seen as Adam prepares to fire.
Heckler & Koch USP Tactical
The Heckler & Koch USP Tactical is used in the episode "Blow Your Own Sail" (5/11/2011) to test the myth of Hollywood sound effects, testing a .45 ACP pistol un-suppressed. In the HD broadcast the "USP Tactical" stamping on the slide can easily be seen. Oddly after using the USP Tactical, which has a threaded barrel extension for a suppressor, they switch to an M1911 based design that had a suppressor already attached that was on the table at the gun range.
Smith & Wesson Model 19/66
Referred as a .357 in most of the gun tests.
Smith & Wesson Model 29
Used in "Firearms Force".
SIG Pro SP2009
Adam was seen holding a rubber prop version in "Bourne Magazine".
Heckler & Koch UMP
Used in the "Phone Book Bullet Proof Car" myth.
Smith & Wesson 39
Referred as a 9mm in most of the gun tests
Smith and Wesson .500 magnum revolver
Used to test does holding a hunting revolver improperly will blow of your fingers when it's fired, using "chicken hands."
Sub-machine Guns
M1928 Thompson
- An M1928 Thompson is used by Grant in the Tree Machine Gun myth.
Heckler and Koch MP5A3
Carried by one of the CIA agents in a Bourne Supremacy clip during "Bourne Magazine".
Heckler & Koch MP5A4
- In the episode where they try to cause avalanches by various different methods, one of the attempts was made (A failed attempt at that) using an Heckler & Koch MP5A4 with a full stock, and surefire flashlight handguards. Also it was used in "shooting through the floor"
Shotguns
12 Gauge Double Barreled Shotgun
- When using a .45 Long Colt revolver proved ineffective at knocking a hat off a head, they attempted to shoot the hat off using a 12 gauge double barreled coach gun with exposed hammers, which still proved ineffective.
Remington 870
- Jamie tested to see if a box full of pepperoni pizzas could stop different types of shotgun rounds using a Remington 870 with a peep sight. He also used it to shoot his custom bullet proof vest, in which the slug round left a gaping hole in it.
Single shot shotgun
It was used to shoot a lock and to help with "shooting through the floor"== Pump action shotgun == The pump action shotgun used in the James Bond special is either a Mossberg 590 Special Purpose 9 shot or a Remington 870 synthetic 7-round sporting ghost sights
UNSORTED (Under Construction)
.22 rifle
- A .22 rifle is used to test a bulletproof shield. One .22 LR round pierced the shield, to the cast's surprise, and horror.
Dillon Aero M134 Minigun
- Season 5, episode 22 "Shooting fish in a barrel": Adam and Jamie uses a Dillon Aero M134 Minigun to shoot a fish in a barrel (resulting in mostly wood chips and fish mousse)
- also used by Kari in the Tree Machine Gun myth
M249 SAW Para
- Tory uses a M249 Paratrooper SAW in the Tree Machine Gun myth.
M1 Garand
- To re-reattempt the scope myth, they used a .30-06 M1 Garand with armor piercing rounds, which finally did shoot through the scope. It was also used in the myth that you can shoot through a lock, as well as bullets shot in the air killing. In this episode, the announcer mistakenly referred to it as the '30.06 assault rifle.'
The M1 was again used to test the "Phone Book Bulletproof Car". One notable goof during that test was that the narrator mistakenly said it was an M14 rifle
M1903 Springfield
Mosin Nagant M91/30
- To reattempt the scope myth, they used an 3.5 PU scope mounted on a semi real looking Mosin Nagant.
Carcano Carbine
- A Carcano Carbine (model 91 cavalry carbine) is used during the first tests of firing through the scope, in which the bolt is removed and the tests scopes are mounted on. also to test the Ice bullet myth
Remington 700
- In one episode, to test the "Shooting through the scope" myth, Adam and Jamie, along with the range owner, tested shooting thought the scope with a .308 caliber Remington 700. If they really wanted to test it properly, they would have used a Winchester Model 70 .30-06 rifle, and would have known that both scopes must be perfectly aligned for the project to work. Also, Hathcock was much closer to his target, while they tested it at 100 yards and inaccurately at point blank. It was retested with a .30-06 later.
- Hathcock said in his own words that he shot through a RIFLE scope, and pondered that if he had waited another second, the other sniper would have likely done the same to him, since to shoot through the scope requires both scopes to be aimed dead on to each other.
.50 muzzle loader
Used in the shooting a cigarette butt
.50 cal bolt action rifle
Used in "Blown Away", "Sonic Boom Sound Off" and "Firearms Force". Most likely a fifty caliber Armalite AR-50
- Pretty sure it was an AR-50. If I remember correctly the guy who owned it described it as such and said something to the effect of he had been looking for an opportunity to fire it. --Charon68 22:23, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
M-14 SOCOM
Used in James Bond special to shoot propane tank with tracer rounds. Most likely a Springfield M1A SOCOM 16
Barrett M82
Used in the "Phone Book Bullet Proof Car" myth.
Chinese Type 56 (AK47 clone)
Used to test if an MP3 player/iPod is bulletproof.
M4 Carbine
Used to test if bathroom tiles covered in fiber-reinforced gypsum cement is bulletproof. It's also used in the "Phone Book Bullet Proof Car" myth.
Browning BAR
During the MacGyver myths, a modified BAR is used as a speargun, firing blank cartridges.
Other
Smoke Grenade
Used in the "Spy Car Escape" myth.
Winans Steam Gun
Used to test if a Civil War myth.
Molotov Cocktail
Used in the episode "Ancient Death Ray" to destroy a boat, when the sunlight failed to light it on fire.
X26 Taser
Used in "Fireball Stun Gun".
Mk 2 grenade
A Mk 2 hand grenade is comically used with the help of quick cuts to make it appear as if the team is tossing grenades in toilets to blow them up. They also pull the pins with their teeth to cheapen the scene further, something they also proved to be impossible.
M2 Flamethrower
Used by Jamie in "Fireball Stun Gun".
Table of Pistols
In the episode "Blow Your Own Sail", a large number of pistols were seen on a table when Adam and Jamie were discussing cocking a pistol sound effects in Hollywood movies.
