Exactly why nothing happens is not made clear, but it is likely that, being both unfamiliar with firearms and stoned to the gills, Darrell has missed any number of important steps, including chambering a round, cocking the hammer, disengaging the safety, or even checking first that the clip is loaded (in the book, it is because the gun's owner has attached a trigger lock, which Darrell has failed to notice until that moment).

Close-up of the revolver. Being a Congressional aide instead of a boyguard, Crandall is demonstrating the exact opposite of trigger discipline - i.e., the trigger is the only part of the gun his hand is touching!

Beretta Model 1935

Darrell stares in confusion at the pistol after he pulls the trigger, but nothing happens. Exactly why is not made clear, but it is likely that, being both unfamiliar with firearms and stoned to the gills, Darrell has missed any number of important steps, including chambering a round, cocking the hammer, disengaging the safety, or even checking first that the clip is loaded (in the book, it is because the gun's owner has attached a trigger lock, which Darrell has failed to notice until that moment).
