The film was first screened at the Cannes Film Festival in May, 2008, earning Del Toro the Festival's best actor award. It was later divided into two parts, Part 1, called ''The Argentine'' being released in the United States on December 12, 2008 to qualify it for the Academy Awards. Both parts were put into wider release in January 2009. The second part, ''Guerilla'', follows Che Guevara as he travels to Bolivia in 1966 in a failed attempt to overthrow the government, eventually leading to his capture and execution in 1967.

M1 Garands were the standard service rifles of the Cuban Army, and many eventually ended up in the hands of the Cuban rebels as well. We see both Fidel ([[Demian Bichir]]) and Che using these weapons. Several of these are found in the train armory.

It is NOT a M1911, in the second part, he uses a Browning Hi-Power 9mm. I can back this up with screencaps.
