I have seen this carbine mis-identified ever since this movie came out. Apparently others are just repeating what someone else assumed. It was not an 1874 Sharps carbine, of which only 496 were made. He (like the real Texas rangers, see Durham’s “Taming the Nueces Strip”) is using an 1868 Sharps carbine conversion. .50-70….of which 31,000 were converted. from Percussion to Cartridge and distributed to troops and millitia’s and yes, texas rangers…was in use into the 80s. | |||

The following guns were used in the film True Grit (2010):
Colt Dragoon
Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) carries her father's Colt Dragoon, as is described in Portis' book. The gun used in the film is an actual percussion Dragoon, while the 1969 film used a cartridge-converted Colt Walker. It can be surmised that the Walker was used due to its even more imposing size in contrast to Mattie's small stature. But the adherence to the source material in this version is much appreciated.
Marshall Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) carries a pair of Colt 1851 Navy revolvers in holsters that fit over his saddle horn. He refers to them in the movie as his "Navy sixes." He uses them both in his famous charge at the end.
Winchester Model 1873
Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) carries a Winchester Model 1873 "Short" rifle as his long arm in the film.
Single Action Army
Rooster also carries a Single Action Army of "Cavalry" length. La Boeuf (Matt Damon) carries a Single Action Army with fancy carved ivory grips.
Winchester 1866 "Yellowboy"
"Lucky" Ned Pepper (Barry Pepper) wields a Winchester 1866 "Yellow Boy" during the famous charge at the end.
Henry 1860
True to the book, Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin) carries a Henry rifle, stolen from Mattie Ross' father. While in the original novel and the in the 1969 version of the film Chaney's rifle was fitted with a proper sling, in this film a length of rope is tied to both ends as a makeshift sling, which is logically easier for an on-the-run outlaw to aquire.
12 Gauge Double Barreled Shotgun
A 12 Gauge Double Barreled Shotgun is carried by a passing Native American who fires it off screen to signal that they are being followed. One is also carried by one of the Farrell brothers of "Lucky" Ned Pepper's (Barry Pepper) gang.
Sharps 1874 Cavalry Carbine
La Boeuf (Matt Damon) uses a Sharps 1874 Cavalry Carbine throughout the film. Mattie is later seen using the Sharps. It is a weapon of uncanny power and precision.
If you want a replica of that gun, somebody makes an exact one of McNelly’s which is exactly like the one Matt Damon’s character is using.

Remington 1875
"Lucky" Ned Pepper (Barry Pepper) carries a Remington 1875 revolver with custom four-leaf clover emblem grips.
