Rifles

M1903A3 Springfield

The M1903A3 Springfield rifle is the general issue firearm for the Marines who land and fight on Guadalcanal in Part 1 and Part 2, as all the new M1 rifles were sent to the army. The Marines seen using the Springfield include PFC Wilbur 'Runner' Conley (Keith Nobbs), Sgt. J.P. Morgan (Joshua Biton) and Lew 'Chuckler' Juergens (Josh Helman). After being replaced with the M1, it was still used by snipers. One of them can be seen used by a Marine in Part 6 during the attack on Peleliu airfield.

Whilst stationed in Melbourne, the Marines replace the M1903 with the M1 Garand, which remains the main battle rifle throughout the series. During Part 3, riding in a train through the Victorian country, several Marines compare the M1 to the M1903. In combat, amongst those who use it are Bill "Hoosier" Smith (Jacob Pitts), Bill Leyden (Brendan Fletcher) and Eugene Sledge (Joseph Mazzello).
