It's definitely NOT a Russian. The only feature it has in common with the Russian is a mount for a lanyard ring, which only the Russian model had; an existing Schofield could have easily had that added. Plus, it's lacking the Russian's distinctive trigger-guard spur, as the poster above noted. But there are two basic structural differences between the gun pictured here and the Russian; the Russian had a differently-shaped grip than the standard Schofield; it was more rounded at the corners, not so squared-off...and the Russian model had a distinctive "bump" along the back of the grip just behind the hammer that the regular Schofield didn't have. This weapon is not a Russian.

The following firearms were used in the film Tombstone:

Tombstone (1993)

double-barreled side-by-side shotgun

Billy Clanton (Thomas Haden Church) loads a side-by-side shotgun during the film's opening shootout with the Cowboys. Several others can be seen throughout the film, used primarily by other Cowboys such as Florentino Cruz (Paul Ben-Victor) in Tombstone, Ike Clanton (Stephen Lang) at the train station and "Curly Bill" Brocius (Powers Boothe) during the Iron Springs shootout.

Winchester Model 1876

Several Cowboys use Winchester Model 1876 rifles during the film, including Johnny Ringo (Michael Biehn), Ike Clanton (Stephen Lang), and Breckenridge (Jason Priestley). Of Earp's men, Sherm McMasters (Michael Rooker) and "Texas Jack" Vermillion (Peter Sherayko) also carry Winchester '76 rifles. According to Sherayko, who was also the film's armorer, there were five Winchester Model 1876 rifles, chambered in .45-60, used in the film.

Single Action Army

As with many Westerns, the Single Action Army is the most commonly seen gun in the film, in the hands (or holsters) of nearly every major and minor character.

Single Action Army Quickdraw Model (4.75" barrel)

Johnny Ringo (Michael Biehn) carries a nickel Quickdraw model. Doc Holliday (Val Kilmer) also has a nickel Quickdraw, which he carries in addition to his Colt Lightning.

Single Action Army Artillery Model (5.5" barrel)

"Texas Jack" Vermillion (Peter Sherayko), Tombstone marshal Fred White (Harry Carey, Jr.), and McMasters (Michael Rooker) each carry Artillery Models with 5.5" barrels.

Single Action Army Cavalry Model (7.5" barrel)

Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) often carries a Cavalry Model in addition to his Buntline Special. Morgan Earp (Bill Paxton) has a Cavalry SAA as his primary weapon, as do "Curly Bill" Brocius (Powers Boothe) (who carries two) and his Cowboy gang. Cochise County Sheriff Johnny Behan (Jon Tenney) also has a Cavalry Model, which Ike Clanton borrows during the O.K. Corral gunfight. Johnny Tyler (Billy Bob Thornton) is disarmed of his by Wyatt when the latter replaces him as faro dealer, with Wyatt tossing the revolver to the bartender as a "keepsake" to keep above the bar. Billy Clanton (Thomas Haden Church) draws his during the O.K. Corral confrontation to begin the gunfight. Barnes (John Corbett) fires one into the air during the Henry V speech, causing the other Cowboys to fire theirs into the air at the speech's conclusion.

Colt Thunderer

Doc Holliday (Val Kilmer) keeps a nickel Colt Lightning as a second sidearm, in addition to his Quickdraw SAA. Note the bird's head grip.

I disagree. If you step frame by frame through the confrontation scene with Billy Clanton, the shoot out at the OK Corral and the confrontation with Johnny Ringo, you can see quite clearly that the Thunderer does not have a 3-1/2" barrel. It is more on the order of 4-1/2" to 5" (like the one pictured above) Greg M

Colt Lightning Shopkeeper

That's NOT a lightning that Kate has there. The gun is smaller and the cylinder and flutes are too short to be a lightning. Its one of the many cheap solid frame DA pistols of the era. Looks more like a "British Bulldog" or some variant of that.

Actually, contrary to the earlier post, that IS a Lightning that Kate is packing. It is not a Cimarron New Model Lightning, which is a modern invention, but rather an historical Lightning double-action with the appropriate long flutes and small stature. Its size is due to the fact that it was chambered in the diminutive .38 Colt cartridge.

I disagree. The profile isn't quite right to be a Lightning. It's some variant of a Bulldog as I stated above. There's no way that's a Lightning. I'd bet my entire gun collection on that.

Check this thread on the Coltforum that shows a picture of guns from the movie. It shows the picture of the "bulldog" that Kate had in the movie:

http://www.coltforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=143268&posted=1#post143268

Here's a picture of some Forehand and Wadsworth British Bulldogs which is what Kate is holding. I wish I could just post this picture on here and get rid of the picture of the lightning but I can't seem to do that. This is the type of gun she is holding. It is definitely NOT a Colt of any type: http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv236/twaits/forehand.jpg

Meteor 10 Gauge side-by-side shotgun

Johnny "Madcap" Tyler (Billy Bob Thornton), the faro dealer, approaches Wyatt with a Belgian-made Meteor 10-gauge side-by-side shotgun, which Virgil Earp (Sam Elliott) picks up and uses after Johnny puts it down. Morgan Earp (Bill Paxton) also is seen carrying it. Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) uses the sawed-off 10-gauge as his backup gun, hidden underneath the faro table at the Oriental, when Johnny Ringo harasses Doc Holliday (Val Kilmer). Doc himself carries one into the O.K. Corral during the confrontation, as the true Doc Holliday had in 1881. Doc's real-life personal shotgun was a 10 gauge Colt double.

Smith & Wesson Schofield

Virgil Earp (Sam Elliott) carries a Smith & Wesson Schofield with a nickel finish and pearl grips. Wyatt seems to carry this revolver in his holster when he is out riding his horse, giving it back to Virgil when talking to him about his choice to serve as City Marshal.

~This firearm looks more like the smith and wesson No. 3 Russian model in the film, especially given the long flat expanse behind the hammer.~

Remington 1875

When Behan is attempting to tell the Earps about Tombstone's positive image, "Turkey Creek" Jack Johnson (Buck Taylor) shoots a man in the background with a Remington 1875. Doc Holliday then sarcastically notes that the city is "very cosmopolitan".

Kentucky Flintlock Rifle

Colt Buntline Special (EMF/Uberti replica)

Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) carries a Colt Buntline Special that appears to have been crafted especially for him in 1878 due to his service in Dodge City. In actuality, the Buntline Special in the film is one of three EMF/Uberti replicas custom made for Tombstone. Although the legendary Buntline Special is often associated with Wyatt Earp, he more likely carried his Smith & Wesson Model 3 Schofield during the O.K. Corral gunfight.

Due to the fact that current production Colt Buntlines are only available in 12" barrels, the film's armorer contacted EMF/Uberti to have three custom Buntlines made for Tombstone. Stevens 10-gauge side-by-side shotgun

Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) carries a three-triggered Stevens 10-gauge during his vendetta ride, notably using it to kill Frank Stilwell (Tomas Arana) at the train depot and "Curly Bill" Brocius at Iron Springs.

Unknown Revolver

During the scene, where Virgil is addressing the citizens of Tombstone, over the gun carrying law, Wyatt rides up to persuade him to reconsider, as Wyatt is getting off of his horse, a revolver with pearl handle grips in a holster is seen on Wyatts side, it is hard to distinguish, but from the grip shape it looks as if it might either be a Colt Lightning or a Smith & Wesson Schofield.

Same scene kinda blurry, but its distinguishable.

I am pretty sure that the revolver in the holster in this scene is a Smith & Wesson Schofield. Later in the movie Virgil also carries a similar revolver if not the same one, during the O.K. gun fight.

It looks to me like a 4th model square butt Merwin-Hulbert revolver. http://www.merwinhulbertco.com/
