These are clearly two different weapons with the same designation (Type 99) - the weapon you refer to, the Type 99 machine gun, is essentially a Type 96 light machine gun modified to accept the more powerful 7.7x58mm Type 99 ammunition. The weapon depicted in Strike Witches is a Japanese Navy Type 99 "machine cannon," which is indeed fed from a drum and fires a far larger round (note that in the image of the assorted characters, Yoshika Miyafuji and Mio Sakumoto are noted as carrying "13mm Type 99"). i have just finished watching this anime (with english subtitles) and think it is an AWESOME anime!!!
