Onoda: 10,000 Nights in the Jungle is a 2021 biographical drama directed by Arthur Harari. It is based on the true story of Hiroo Onoda, an Imperial Japanese Army intelligence officer who refused to surrender at the end of World War II and spent 29 years holding out in the jungles of the Philippines.
1944: 22-year-old Hiroo Onoda (portrayed by Yuya Endo as a young man and Kanji Tsuda in later age), trained for intelligence duty, discovers a philosophy that runs counter to the official line: no suicide, stay alive no matter what, the mission is more important than anything else. He is sent to Lubang, a small island in the Philippines, where the Americans are about to land, and is to wage a guerrilla war there until the Japanese troops return. But while the war soon ends for the rest of the Japanese army, it continues for Onoda for ten thousand more days.
