Militsia officer Vasiliy Fokich Seryozhkin (Valeriy Zolotukhin), a local inspector in a Siberian village, investigates a theft in a general store. Soon a member of a team of timber raftsmen confesses in the crime. But Seryozhkin isn't sure that the case is closed.
