The series is produced by Joshua Donen, David Fincher, Jennifer Miller, and Tim Miller. Each episode was animated by different crews from a range of countries. The series is a re-imagining of Fincher and Miller's long-in-development reboot of Heavy Metal. The 18-episode first season was released on March 15th, 2019. The 8-episode second season was released on May 14th, 2021. The 9-episode third season was released on May 20th, 2022.

The three titles of the show all have meanings: "Love" indicates the show's sexual content and nudity, "Death" means violence and the gory content, and "Robots" means science fiction, robotics, dystopia, and fantasy.
