The One That Got Away is a 1957 British World War II film, starring Hardy Krüger, about the only German Soldier who escaped British captivity during World War II. The screenplay is based on the 1956 nonfiction book The One That Got Away by Kendal Burt and James Leasor. Based on an actual incident, the story began on September 5, 1940, the Battle of Britain is at its height when German fighter pilot Franz von Werra is shot down over Kent and captured by the British. Despite two intimidating interrogations, he tells the Royal Air Force interrogator that he will escape within six months. Shortly thereafter, von Werra is transferred to a prisoner-of-war camp in the Lake District. He follows up his announcement with action.
