Richard III is a 1995 adaptation of Shakespeare's play starring Ian McKellan as the title character. It also stars Annette Bening, Kristin Scott Thomas, Jim Broadbent, Robert Downey, Jr, and Nigel Hawthorne. It was directed by Richard Loncraine.
Though the story remains faithful to Shakespeare's play about the ambitious and twisted Richard of Gloucester, it is set in London during an alternate timeline of the World War II era. Richard's evil plans are told with parallels to the fascism that ruled Europe under Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini.
