In modern-day Europe, astronomers detect a strong radio signal originating from another star system- proof of the existence of an intelligent extraterrestrial species. As the world waits for first contact with the aliens, their craft suddenly arrive on Earth and begin a campaign of extermination against the Human race. The series focuses on a diverse group of survivors trying to find their loved ones and discern the motives and nature of the mysterious invaders.
