'''The Big Heat''' was filmed in 1953 with Glen Ford playing a Detective Sergeant whose investigating the death of fellow officer Tom Duncan which seem like suicide. But when Duncan's mistress Lucy Chapman claims other wise and mentions a second home that Duncan had which was above more than his salary could afford. Bannion decides to dig deeper with a visit to Mrs. Duncan but she resents the implications and calls the Police Commissioner and Bannon is told to layoff the subject by his Lieutenant.  When Lucy Chapman turns up dead with cigarette burn all over her body Bannon resumes the investigation even though it's a county matter. After threatening calls are made to his home Bannon pays a visit to the local mob boss Mike Lagana and confronts him about the calls in Lagana's home. When the warning fall on Bannon's deaf ears and attempt is made on his life. A bomb meant for him is placed in his car but Mrs. Bannon is killed instead when it explodes in the drive way of his home. Disgusted with the cover ups and the corruption Dave Bannon resigns from the police force and goes on a one man crusade against Mike Lagana and his crew.
