Massacre in Rome (original Italian title Rappresaglia) is a French-Italian 1973 war drama directed by George P. Cosmatos. The movie depicts the events of the Ardeatine massacre in Rome in March 24, 1944, when more than three hundred Italian civilians were executed by Nazi German occupation troops as a reprisal for a partisan attack against the SS Police Regiment "Bozen". The film stars Richard Burton as the head of Rome Gestapo Herbert Kappler and Marcello Mastroianni as Italian priest Father Pietro Antonelli.
The following weapons were used in the film Massacre in Rome:
Pistols
Custom Mauser C96 20-round
One of the Mauser C96 pistols, used by SS soldiers and officers during the mass execution of Italian victims in Ardeatine Caves, is a custom pistol with a 20-round fixed magazine and "Red 9" grips (the Mauser C96 "Red 9" never existed with 20-round magazines). The magazine itself has traces of machining on the bottom part.
Mauser C96
Standard Mauser C96 pistols are used by SS soldiers and officers during the mass execution of Italian victims in Ardeatine Caves. Most pistols lack the hole in safety lever knob, so they appear to be a "Wartime Commercial" model.
Mauser C96 M1920 "Rework" Model
One of the Mauser C96 pistols is a short-barreled M1920 "Rework" Model, converted from a "Red 9".
Beretta M1934
Italian partisans, including Paolo (Giancarlo Prete) and Elena (Delia Boccardo), use Beretta M1934 pistols.
Beretta Model 70
An anachronistic Beretta Model 70 is briefly seen in hands of a partisan.
Walther P38
A Walther P38 is seen in hands of SS-Sturmbannführer Hellmuth Dobbrick (uncredited), the officer in charge of the attacked unit. Some other officers carry holsters for s P38, but they appear to be flat and empty.
Submachine Guns
MP40
Many German soldiers and some Italian partisans are armed with MP40 submachine guns. Some MP40s are fitted with brown Bakelite furniture that is typical for post-1943 manufactured guns (such weapons are often seen in 1970s Italian movies).
MP41
A pair of German sentries, seen during the opening credits, carry MP41 SMGs.
Beretta Model 38A
Partisans use the Beretta Model 38A SMG.
Beretta Model 38/44
What appears to be a Beretta Model 38/44 is briefly seen in hands of a German soldier.
Rifles
Karabiner 98k
German troops use Karabiner 98k rifles, both standard and Kriegsmodell versions.
Machine Guns
MG42
An MG42 is seen mounted on a Kubelwagen car.
Browning M2HB
A Browning M2HB, standing in for a German 20mm Flak, is seen next to the headquarters of Field Marshal Kesselring.
Other Weapons
SRCM Mod. 35
SRCM Mod. 35 hand grenades are used by Italian partisans. The combination of vivid red body and unpainted aluminum details match the S.R.C.M. version of the Modello 35 grenade series (OTO and Breda versions have black caps and levers).
