Film directed by George Sherman in 1971, starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. When Martha McCandle's grandson is kidnapped and his ranchers slaughtered by John Fain and his men, her husband Jake, their sons Michael and James, the indian Sam and Jake's dog Dog, go after the badguys, who are holding Jake's grandson for a ransom of one million dollars.
Colt Single Action Army
Jake McCandles (John Wayne) uses a Colt Single Action Army as his sidearm in a quickdraw holster. He only uses it in the end gunbattle, which he uses to wound Fain in the arm moments before being wounded himself. When Jake runs out of bullets for his Colt, he draws a pitchfork and kills one of Fain's men.
James McCandles (Patrick Wayne), Jake's son, uses a Colt SAA for the first half of his film before switching to Michael's Bergmann 1911.
John Fain (Richard Boone) uses his SAA for the majority of the fight scenes in the film. In the beginning, he guns down several ranchers with his SAA. In the end gunbattle, after being wounded by Jake, he returns fire and wounds Jake in the arm. He also uses his SAA in the end gunbattle to wound Jake's dog in the shoulder and Sam (Bruce Cabot) in the chest.
Several of Fain's men keep SAA's as well.
"Greener Coach Guns"
Jake (John Wayne) uses 2 twin double-barrel shotguns in the movie. He refers to them as "my Greeners". Greener was and still is a British maker of fine shotguns. He gives one to Sam, who, along with his knife, uses it as his main weapon. Sam uses the shotgun to kill one of Fain's men (even though it takes two shots to kill the badguy, Sam fires from a long distance away). Jake uses it to kill Fain's brother.
After Fain's brother is killed by Jake's shotgun, Fain asks for his brother's shotgun and fires it at Jake but then runs out of rounds.
Remington 1866 Derringer
Jake McCandles (John Wayne) carries a Double-barrel, Remington 1866 Derringer, which he loans to his grandson at the end of the movie. His grandson wounds one of Fain's men.
Movie prop: "Bergmann 1911"
Jake's son, Michael (Christopher Mitchum), carries a semiauto pistol, which is suposed to be a "Bergmann 1911". Actually, it is a movie prop, made using a Walther P-38:
The gun has been modified to look similar to this pistol: a Bergmann 1896
Winchester 1892
In the second scene in the film, Jake (John Wayne) is seen aiming a Winchester 1892 at the guys who are about to hang the Scottish sheepherder. Fain and several of his men use Winchesters to ambush the car convoy.
Unidentified Sniper Rifles
Michael's main weapon is a bolt action sniper rifle which he uses to shoot a deer, the badguy sniper and Fain in the back. The badguy sniper uses one as well, and wounds Jake in the leg moments before being shot twice by Michael.
