The Son is an American western drama television series based on the 2013 book of the same name by Philipp Meyer. Created and developed by Meyer, Brian McGreevy, and Lee Shipman, the series is a sweeping family saga that spans 150 years and three generations of the McCullough family. The ten-episode, one-hour drama traces the story of the transformation of patriarch Eli McCullough (Pierce Brosnan), from good-natured innocence to calculated violence, as he loses everything on the wild frontier, setting him on the path to building a ranching-and-oil dynasty of unsurpassed wealth and privilege. The Son deftly explores how Eli’s ruthlessness and quest for power triggers consequences that span generations, as the McCulloughs rise to become one of the richest families reigning in Texas. The series premiered in the US on AMC on April 8, 2017.The second and final season will premiere on April 24, 2019.
The following weapons were used in the television series The Son:
Pistols
Colt M1911
Eli McCullough (Pierce Brosnan) carries a Colt M1911 chambered in .45ACP on his right hip, with a double spare magazine pouch on his left. Historically this should be the original 1911 variant as the 1911A1 was not introduced until 1924 (9 years after the events portrayed in the series).
Colt Model 1903
Phineas McCullough (David Wilson Barnes) carries a Colt Model 1903 in a shoulder holster. A good choice for the character. He is a business man and a gentleman. A compact pistol ,in a discrete/concealable shoulder holster would be more appropriate for the character then a large farmed revolver in a belt holster. It is 1915 so the pistol could be either the Model 1903 or the Model 1908. I have opted for the .32 caliber Model 1903.
Mauser C96
A Mauser C96 is also used by Neptune (J. Quinton Johnson).
Revolvers
Colt 1851 Navy revolvers are used by Texas Rangers.
Single Action Army Cavalry Model (7.5" barrel)
Tom Sullivan (Matthew Posey) carries a Cavalry Single Action Army with a 7.5" barrel. Additionally there are multiple characters seen with the Single Action Army. Many of them extras.
Smith & Wesson No. 3 Schofield
Pedro Garcia (Carlos Bardem) appears to be carrying a Smith & Wesson Schofield. Though only seen holstered the Schofield grip is distinctive.
Smith & Wesson "Triple Lock"
Pete McCullough (Henry Garrett) is seen with a holstered large framed Smith & Wesson "Triple Lock" double action revolver. This is requiring some deductive reasoning. The story is set in 1915 and the .44 caliber "Triple Lock" was the only large framed double action revolver that Smith & Wesson was making for the commerical market. The company was producing the .455 caliber version for the Canadian Army, but it was not on the market.]]
.
Rifles/Carbines
Hawken Rifle
In the series premiere "First Son of Texas" (S1E01), a young Eli (Jacob Lofland) carries what appears to be a Hawken Rifle with an octagonal barrel and double set triggers while fishing. He uses it to hunt a turkey and later defend the homestead.
Winchester Model 1907
Eli McCullough (Pierce Brosnan) and some of the ranch hands use a self loading Winchester Model 1907 chambered in .351WSL as their primary long guns.
Winchester Model 1895 Rifle
A Winchester Model 1895 is used by one of Eli's men.
Winchester Model 1895 Carbine
The carbine version of the Winchester Model 1895 also is seen.
Winchester Model 1873
Winchester Model 1873 Rifles are carried by several characters in the series.
Winchester Model 1894
Neptune (J. Quinton Johnson) also uses a Winchester Model 1894. In addition Pete McCullough (Henry Garrett) is also seen carrying a Winchester Model 1894 carbine.
Krag-Jorgensen Model 1896 Carbine
Krag-Jorgensen M1896 Carbine is used by Niles Gilbert (James Parks) in "Death Song" (S1E04).
Remington Model 8
Phineas McCullough (David Wilson Barnes) carries the Remington Model 8 autoloading rifle in "Honey Hunt" (S1E08).
Shotguns
Winchester Model 1897
A Winchester M1897 also is used by one of Eli's men.
12 Gauge Double Barreled Shotgun
Both Neptune (J. Quinton Johnson) and Tom Sullivan (Matthew Posey) use Double Barreled Shotguns in "No Prisoners" (S1E05).
Machine Guns
Lewis Gun
In "Death Song" (S1E04), Neptune (J. Quinton Johnson) uses a Lewis Gun when battling opposing forces at the river. This is a possible anachronism as earnest production on the Lewis gun did not start until late 1914, with adoption by the British military in 1915. Although it is possible that one was being used in Texas in 1915, it is unlikely.
