The following weapons can be seen in the film Tears of the Sun:
- I'll finish later. A few more things to fix up. -Winn
Remington 870
The team’s forward scout, Lake (Jake Messner) wields both a Remington 870 and a M4A1. The shotgun is equipped with an extended magazine tube, a side saddle shell holder, and a strange compensator. The squad’s designated marksman, Flea, (Chad Smith), takes the shotgun after Lake is shot, but the weapon was dropped and Flea switched back to his M4A1.
Colt M1911A1
The Colt M1911A1 appears in the hands of two senor officers of the Nigerian Militants.
AKM
The most commonly used assault rifle on the African continent, AKM are seen in the hands of militants, refugees, and Doc, (Paul Francis) who took it from a dead militant. He is never seen using it, however.
AKS-47
The under folding version of the AK-47 is seen being used by several soldiers as well as the full stocked variant.
- This is not an AKS-47; more likely a Norinco Type 56-1 with an AKM lower hand guard. -MT2008
AKMSU
A few soldiers are seen wielding the AKMSU, which uses the same kind of ammunition as the AK-47.
M18A1 Claymore
The team’s demolition man, Red (Cole Hauser), carried three M18A1 Claymores into the field with him. He uses two to ambush the militants and later uses it to hold back enemy troops.
DShK Heavy Machine gun
It’s hard to determine, but a heavy machine gun; actual DShK or Browning M2 mocked-up is seen on a mounted platform of a flatbed truck.
FN FAL
Actual footage of the violence in Africa is seen in the beginning of the film and one scene shows several soldiers carrying FN FAL rifles.
FN MAG
Seen in the actual footage at the beginning, a government soldier is seen with what looks to be a FN MAG, but please correct me if I’m wrong.
Karabiner 98k
What appears to be a WWII-vintage Karabiner 98k is seen in the hands of at least two militants. They are never given explicit detail, sadly.
M72 L.A.W.
The Light Anti-Tank Weapon is seen having been carried by Red (Cole Hauser) and Slo (Nick Chinlund). The two weapons are fired by Lake and Flea, and then dropped as they are unreloadable.
M1A
Previously thought to have been an M21 SWS, the rifle carried by Silk (Charles Ingram) is in fact a M1A, as it is lacking a selector switch. He uses the weapon throughout the movie.
M4A1
Lieutenant Waters (Bruce Willis), Flea (Chad Smith), and Lake (Johnny Messner) as their primary weapons. "Flea" has a 6x48 Sightron S33 scope on the carry handle, a cheek pad on the stock, a silencer, and a custom paintjob of green and black. "Lake" has a suppressor on his rifle. Both Lake and Lt. Waters both have M68 Aimpoint scopes fitted on their weapons. When the team first arrives in Africa, their M4A1's are fitted with AN/PVS-17 night-vision scopes which are removed once morning arrives.
M4A1 with M203
Team corpsman, Doc, and radioman, Zee, both carry M4A1 carbines with M203 grenade launchers.
Beretta 92FS
While I was hoping to get through a movie without a Beretta 92FS, but sure enough, one shows up in the hands of a militant officer.
M16A2
A few of the Marines disembarking the helicopter in the beginning of the film are carrying M16A2 rifles, as well as a few Marines at the end of the film.
M18 Smoke Grenade
The SEAL team carries a number of M18 smoke grenades that are used to signal to the incoming helicopters as well as the incoming bombers near the end of the film.
M60D
The M60D is seen mounted on a helicopter, but it is never fired.
M60E4
Red (Cole Hauser), the team’s designed heavy-gunner is seen armed with a M60E4 machine gun without the film. Doc (Paul Francis) wields the weapon when Red runs to set-up a Claymore. Another Navy SEAL who accompanies Captain Bill Rhodes (Tom Skerritt) also wields a M60E4.
M67 grenade
All of the SEALs carry and use M67 hand grenades throughout the mission.
Heckler & Koch MK23
The pistol designed especially for USSOCOM, the Heckler & Koch Mark 23 is used by several Navy SEALs, including Lt. Waters, Zee, Red, Flea, Lake, and Slo.
Type 69 RPG
The Chinese-replica rocket launcher is seen in the hands of several Militant rebels throughout.
RPD
A militant rebel is seen with a RPD light machine gun.
M249 SAW
Slo, (Nick Chinlund), the squads designed heavy gunner and tech-guy is seen with his paratrooper M249 SAW throughout the movie. Silk (Charles Ingram) also uses the weapon during the climax firefight.
SIG Sauer P226
The real life Navy SEAL’s favorite handgun, the SIG-Sauer P226, is seen in the hands of Doc and Silk, (Paul Francis and Charles Ingram).
SKS rifle
Several rebels and refugees are seen carrying SKS rifle.
Walther PP
In a deleted scene, Lt. Waters leaves the preist running the hospital a Walther PP as self-defense, though proves to be useless as the preist and everyone else at the hospital are slaughtered by the rebels.
The gun is a Walther PP, you can tell by the longer barrel, and if you look at the back strap of the grip you will notice it has grip panels over the wrap around grip used on a PPK.
L1A1 Rifle
At the end of the film, one of the Cameroon border guards can be briefly seen armed with an L1A1 rifle instead of an AK variant.
HALO jump
The High Altitude Low Opening jump seen in the beginning of the film was performed by several former soldiers. One such man, landed several hundred yards off-shore and drowned by getting tangled in his parachute.
