Introduced by Winchester in 1876. A larger, stronger version of the 1873 Winchester. It was available in the following calibers: 40-60 WCF; 45-60 WCF; 45-75 WCF; 50-95 Express. It was manufactured in four different variations. Carbine, musket, sporting rifle and express rifle. It was manufactured and sold from 1876 - 1897. Approximately 64,000 were manufactured.
The Model 1876 in 45-75 was carried by Canada's North-West Mounted Police (now the Royal Canadian Mounted Police - Canadian Mounties) for many years. This model is often referred to as the "Centennial".
With the introduction of the John Browning designed Winchester Model 1886 the Centennial was outmoded. However Winchester continued to manufacture it for another eleven years.
