The Quiet American is a 2002 co-production screen adaptation of the eponymous novel by Graham Greene. Directed by Phillip Noyce, the feature stars Michael Caine as Thomas Fowler, a British reporter in Saigon in early 1950s, and Brendan Fraser as Alden Pyle, an employee of the American mission.
The following weapons were used in the film The Quiet American:
Pistols
M1911A1
In the scene in Phat Diem a French officer (Mathias Mlekuz) gives his M1911A1 to Fowler (Michael Caine). General The (Quang Hai) carries what appears to be a 1911 with pearl grips.
Submachine Guns
MAT-49
French soldiers carry MAT-49 SMGs in several scenes. In the scene on the watch tower a Vietnamese soldier holds a MAT-49 until Pyle (Brendan Fraser) disarms him.
Thompson M1928A1
Some of General The's soldiers carry Thompson M1928A1 SMGs.
Thompson M1/M1A1
Some of General The's soldiers also carry Thompson M1 or M1A1 SMGs.
Rifles
MAS-36
Most French soldiers are armed with MAS-36 rifles. The second Vietnamese soldier in the scene on the watch tower has a MAS-36.
M1 Garand
M1 Garands are seen in hands of General The's soldiers.
M1 Carbine
General The's soldiers also carry M1 Carbines.
Machine Guns
Chatellerault M1924/29
French soldiers carry Chatellerault M1924/29 light machine guns.
Browning Automatic Rifle
What appears to be a Browning Automatic Rifle is briefly seen on a blockpost in General The's base.
Browning M2HB
Several Browning M2HB heavy machine guns are seen on General The's base. M2HBs are also mounted on French landing craft.
Other
Mk 2 Hand Grenade
Some French soldiers carry Mk 2 hand grenades.
Unidentified mortar
A mortar is seen on French positions during the operation in Phat Diem. The movie was filmed in Vietnam so Soviet BM-37 Mortar or its Chinese version Type 53 is a possible (though not necessary) guess.
Trivia
A pair of 105mm M2A1 howitzers (better known under post-1962 designation M101A1) are seen in General The's base.
