To Have and Have Not was filmed in 1944 with Humphrey Bogart playing world-weary gunrunner Harry Morgan and his alcoholic sidekick, Eddie played by Walter Brennan on the island of Martinique running a boat for hire. World War II is going on around them when an American customer of theirs turns up dead. The Gestapo shows up as guest of the Vichy French and questions Harry them confiscates his money. Being put in the middle of the Gestapo's search for the leader of the French resistance Harry decides to help resistance leader escape with the help of Marie "Slim" Browning played by Lauren Bacall.
