The M91 is an unofficial designation for a series of machine pistols that first began appearing in movies and television series filmed in British Columbia, Canada during the early-1990s. The M91 was designed from the ground up as a blank-firing weapon by a local gunsmith in Vancouver in 1991 (hence the "91" in its name); it was never intended nor designed to fire live ammunition. The M91 did not enter widespread production, and the designer quickly went out of business. The prototype weapons were sold to armorers in Vancouver, which re-purposed them for use in local productions. Since 1993, the M91 series have turned up repeatedly in movies and television shows produced in British Columbia. The weapons were never given a name, but are informally known as "M91".

There are two main variants of the M91: The M91S has a blocky upper receiver design, while the M91R has a cylindrical upper receiver. Both variants of the M91 use the same basic lower receiver design, feed from Uzi magazines, fire 9mm P.A.K. blanks, and are fitted with FN FAL pistol grips. Aside from the magazines and pistol grips, all other components and parts of the M91 series are proprietary designs - even the springs were built from scratch.

The M91 series machine pistols have appeared in the following films and television series:

M91S

The M91S ("S" for "square") has a blocky upper receiver design, and fires from an open bolt. It has two sub-variations - a long-barreled version with an elongated receiver end that comes standard with a flash hider, and a short-barreled version with no front sight and a threaded barrel. The short-barreled version of the M91S is best known for its appearance in the 1994 film Timecop. In some film and television appearances, the short-barreled version of the M91S is fitted with muzzle attachments such as MAC-10-style barrel shrouds or custom muzzle breaks; it has also been seen fitted with laser sights.

M91R

The M91R ("R" for "round") has a cylindrical upper receiver and a radically different appearance from the M91S. It is best known as the "Cylon SMG" due to its appearances in the 21st century reboot of the Battlestar Galactica franchise (particularly the made-for-television film Battlestar Galactica: Razor), though like the M91S, it was not originally created for any specific production.
