The M1914 Hotchkiss machine gun became the standard machine gun of the French Army during World War I. It was manufactured by the French arms company of Hotchkiss et Cie, which had been established by American industrialist Benjamin B. Hotchkiss. The M1914 was the last version of a series of nearly identical Hotchkiss designs. The Hotchkiss M1914 became standard for the French infantry in late 1917. The American Expeditionary Forces (A.E.F.) in France also used the M1914 Hotchkiss extensively in 1917 and 1918.

The Hotchkiss machine gun remained in active service with the French army until the early 1940s and used by the Germans for secondary troops guarding installations during World War II. The Japanese produced two variants under licence, the Type 3 Heavy Machine Gun chambered in 6.8mm Arisaka and the Type 92 Heavy Machine Gun chambered in 7.7mm SR. Both retained the clip feed of the original.
