S.W.A.T. was a television action series that followed the actions of an elite special weapons unit within the ranks of a Southern California police department. The series, which aired on ABC for two seasons from 1975 to 1976, helped popularize the idea of such a unit to the general public. The series would be adapted as a feature film in 2003.
The following weapons were used in the television series S.W.A.T. (1975):
Rifles
M16
The M16 is the primary weapon of SWAT and seen used by all the officers in the series including Lieutenant Dan "Hondo" Harrelson (Steve Forrest), Sgt. Deacon "Deke" McKay (Rod Perry), Officer Jim Street (Robert Urich), Officer Dominic Luca (Mark Shera), and Officer T.J. McCabe (James Coleman).
Armalite AR-18
SWAT trainees are seen practicing with this rifle in the series premiere "The Killing Ground" (S1E01). It's also used by the assassin Mr. Bravo (Christopher George) in the episode "Bravo Enigma", as well as being identified by name in the same episode.
Winchester Model 70
The Winchester Model 70 is the primary weapon of SWAT's designated sniper, Officer T.J. McCabe (James Coleman).
Beretta BM59
The Beretta BM59 fitted with a flash hider that makes the rifle resemble an M14 is used by several characters in the series. This customized rifle was used in several series filmed in the 1970's.
M1 Carbine
The M1 Carbine (sometimes fitted with a scope) is used by various suspects in the series.
J&R Engineering M80 Carbine
The J&R Engineering M80 Carbine was used by cult leader Joey Hopper (Sal Mineo) in "A Coven of Killers" (S1E02) and by a pair of SCUBA clad assassins in the episode "Bravo Enigma".
Handguns
M1911A1
An M1911A1 is the sidearm that Lieutenant Dan "Hondo" Harrelson (Steve Forrest) carries in his shoulder holster.
Colt Official Police
The Colt Official Police is used by several characters throughout the series, notably uniformed officers.
Colt Python
A Colt Python is used in the series premiere "The Killing Ground" (S1E01).
Walther P38
Various suspects throughout the series are seen using the Walther P38.
Shotguns
Winchester 1897
Officer T.J. McCabe fires the Winchester Model 1897 shotgun in the series premiere "The Killing Ground" (S1E01). This appears to be a continuity error as there appeared to an Ithaca mounted in his patrol car.
Ithaca 37
The Ithaca 37 shotgun is also used by officers in the series.
Other
Federal M201-Z Grenade Launcher
Several members of SWAT also use the Federal M201-Z Grenade Launcher, primarily to launch tear gas canisters.
