In the Heat of the Night is the 1967 crime thriller starring Sidney Poitier as a respected Philadelphia homicide detective who happens to be an African-American and who butts heads with the local police chief of Sparta, Mississippi (Rod Steiger) over the murder of wealthy businessman. The film would produce two film sequels as well as a television adaptation that starred Carroll O'Connor.

The Smith & Wesson Model 20 is the sidearm carried by most of the officers of the Sparta police department including Chief Bill Gillespie (Rod Steiger) and Sgt. Sam Wood (Warren Oates). A nickel-plated version is held by Ralph Henshaw (Anthony James) and then Det. Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier).
