The Promise is a 2011 British miniseries starring Claire Foy as Erin, a teenage British girl who accompanies her best friend Eliza to Israel when she is called up for national service. Along the way, she reads the diary of her grandfather Len Matthews (Christian Cooke), a paratrooper and World War II veteran who was sent to post-war Palestine as part of the British mandate. Len and his mates are caught between the Jews and the Arabs, and Eliza explores life in the Palestinian territories, with her path ultimately leading to a promise her grandfather made to an Arab family decades ago.
