The Finnish Valmet M78 Light Machine Gun has the standard clubfoot RPK style buttstock and either a wooden or black Synthetic forearm. It has been chambered in 5.56mm (.223 Remington), 7.62x39mm, and 7.62x51mm (.308 Winchester). In the early 1980s, Valmet released a version of the M78 with a black Synthetic Thumbhole stock and black Synthetic Foregrip, called the M78/83.
The Finnish Valmet M78 or M78/83 light machine gun has appeared in the following films used by the following actors:
- Arnold Schwarzenegger as Col. John Matrix in Commando (Valmet M78/83)
- Central American rebels in Predator (Valmet M78/83)
- Wolverines in Red Dawn (Valmet M78)
- Russian Paratroopers in Red Dawn (Valmet M78)
