Kino's Journey ("Kino no Tabi") is an anime series adapted from a series of novels by Keiichi Sigsawa (a pen name with a bonus for firearms enthusiasts). The series chronicles the journey of a young girl named Kino and her Mottorad (a talking motorcycle) named Hermes as they travel from country to country. Kino has a policy of staying in each country for only three days and doing her best to not get involved with the country's problems, choosing to remain a casual observer of each culture. The series takes place in a semi-fantasy environment, with the technology of each country varying from primitive to high-tech. As such, the weapons shown vary greatly both in terms of age and modifications. Most firearms in the series are referred to as "Persuaders".
The series consists of a 13 episode television series, as well as two 30 minute long movies, Kino's Journey: Life Goes On and Kino's Journey: Country of Illness -For You-, which function more as bonus episodes. All three are included in this article.
The following firearms were seen in the Anime Kino's Journey: The Beautiful World:
Kino's Weapons
"Cannon"
Kino's weapon of choice, "The Cannon" is a custom Colt 1851 Navy London Model revolver. It is described as firing .44 caliber bullets (as opposed to the 1851's normal .36 caliber bullets) and uses "liquid gunpowder". Kino is also seen detaching the loading lever from the front of the barrel and using at as a foregrip when using a specialized, high-power round.
"The Ranger"
Kino's secondary weapon is a custom Colt Woodsman Match Target (a 2nd Series as indicated by the magazine release behind the trigger guard) referred to as "The Ranger". It features a threaded barrel for the addition of a sound suppressor, and a laser sight has been built into the weighted compensator. Kino keeps it in an IPSC holster behind her back.
Ballistic Knife
Kino carries a ballistic knife capable of firing .22 caliber rounds out of the grip. She appears to have replaced one of the barrels with a laser pointer.
Handguns
Aside from Kino's "Cannon", several (unmodified) Colt 1851 Navy London Model revolver frames can be seen on episode 13.
Colt Single Action Army
The SAA revolver is a common weapon in the series.
Colt Woodsman
Several standard Colt Woodsman pistols can be seen throughout the series. A Woodsman is seen once in the hands of a old wise man's caretaker in Episode 11, and components for Woodsman pistols can be seen in the Gunsmith's Shop in episode 13.
Bergmann-Bayard M1903
One of the slave traders that Kino encounters in episode 2 carries a Bergmann-Bayard M1903 pistol.
SIG-Sauer P220
In the second movie, "Country of Illness -For You-", an officer working in the "Post Office" is armed with a SIG-Sauer P220.
Walther PP
The Walther PP is seen on two different occasions, first in episode 5 in the hands of a man who voted the rest of his fellow citizens to death (don't ask), and again in episode 11 in the hands of a vengeful widow. Both models shown have a bottom-mounted magazine catch.
S&W Model 19
In Episode 9, a S&W Model 19 can be seen during a montage depicting a country's violent history.
Long Guns
Karabiner 98k
The king in episode 7 uses a Karabiner 98k.
Mossberg M500
In episode 6, a character referred to as "The Colonel" uses a Mossberg M500.
Custom M38 Mosin Nagant Carbine
In episode 7, one of the contestants in the Coliseum battles uses a custom M38 Mosin Nagant Carbine. The rifle is drawn with a thicker profile to mesh with the art style of the animation.
Custom Pederson Device
When her M38 proves to be too slow of a weapon to use against Kino, the combatant ups the ante by installing a custom Pederson device, converting the M38 into an fully-automatic rifle fed from an external stick magazine. (In reality, the Pederson device was a bolt conversion for the M1903 Springfield that replaced the manual bolt with a semi-automatic system that fed from a 30 round .30 carbine magazine.)
Unidentified Shotgun
In episode 2, a slave trader pulls out an unidentified shotgun. The weapon is depicted as having both a top-folding stock and a removable box magazine.
Unidentified Infantry Rifle
Soldiers from several different countries are seen with generic semi-automatic infantry rifles. The weapons are not shown clearly enough to identify the make and model, and they are likely intended to be copies of several different WWII era infantry weapons.
MG42
While staying with "Master", Kino is given the opportunity to test out an MG42, which is described as being a newly developed "rapid-fire persuader" built in a neighboring country.
Other
Gunstore
A gunstore is briefly seen in Episode 3. Most of the weapons visible are too small or not detailed enough to make a positive identification, although a few Colt 1851 revolvers can been seen inside the case.
"Master's" Gun Collection
When Kino retrieves the MG42 from "Master's" gun cabinet, an assortment of long guns can be seen inside.
