Discussion

Please add your thoughts regarding this page here:

I am in the process of creating a similar page for the SIG-Sauer P220 series, but with ways to identify them from each other. I like this idea and think it could be beneficial to allow users to have all the variants in one place, rather than scroll through the entire page. In some cases, the pages don't have ALL the variants, so this is a good spot to place them.----JazzBlackBelt-- 20:19, 21 March 2012 (CDT)

Pages like these show just how supersaturated the market is for M1911-type pistols. There are already so many, and yet companies are still building MORE types, and the public just eats it up. --Mazryonh 09:26, 22 March 2012 (CDT)

Maybe it's just me, if you're going to do a page like this. It should be broken down more than just standard and compact. You have the GI military style (M1911, Springfield GI, RIA), Government Model (Series 70, Springfield Mil-Spec), Enhanced (Combat Elite, TRP) and Race gun (STI, Infinity). The Commander size 4" and 4.25" barrels should have their own section. Same with the Officer 3" barrel. --Predator20 11:22, 22 March 2012 (CDT)
This is supposed to be an identification guide, not spec guide. I think that arranging them according to size/barrel length will be more prudent than 'style'.----JazzBlackBelt-- 20:07, 22 March 2012 (CDT)
So what counts as "enhanced," then? Accessory rails and longslide variants would be obvious (since the original military variants didn't have those), but what else? And wouldn't it be better to call them "non-standard" M1911s instead of "enhanced," since an enhancement to one user of a pistol may be a detriment to another user of that same pistol, but both can agree that it is a nonstandard variant, of standard or compact barrel length?--Mazryonh 22:28, 22 March 2012 (CDT)
Dude ya'll can change it and call it what in the hell ever you want. All I was doing was breaking down the types to something more than standard. "enhanced definition improve or embellish." Beavertails grip safeties allow a higher hold and prevent hammer bite. Whether that's a detriment to one user is irrelevant. It's for identification purposes only, you're reading way too much into it.--Predator20 23:11, 22 March 2012 (CDT)
Okay, it's just that I remember how in Metal Gear Solid 3 Naked Snake gushed about how his M1911A1 with a removed grip safety and a host of other modifications made it "the finest gun he'd ever handled," so to me his speech signalled that it was possible that one of the game's firearms consultants thought that a grip safety was a liability rather than an asset. I know how long-winded debates on the merits of "bells and whistles" on firearms can be; I just thought that to avoid argument, "non-standard" would be a more neutral term than "enhanced." Look at how many people disagree with the lack of an external safety on Glocks, for instance. In any case, it helps us all on this wiki when one's definitions are sound and thorough. --Mazryonh 00:16, 23 March 2012 (CDT)

Predator, I totally agree! This idea is still a work in progress and that is exactly the sort of feedback I wanted to hear! --Zackmann08 11:40, 22 March 2012 (CDT)

Any plans to do a page for AK's or AR's? --AndCA 16:35, 22 March 2012 (CDT)

Yes. Good tips. :-) --Zackmann08 16:53, 22 March 2012 (CDT)

Ok lets stop hating on Predator for his hard work here... --Zackmann08 22:40, 22 March 2012 (CDT)

Just messing around. I think Para GI Expert should just be in the Government Model section. But there can be overlap--Predator20 17:35, 22 March 2012 (CDT)

Is a dynamically-generated list possible for these gallery pages?

The gallery type of page looks to me like it could use a dynamically generated list (the kind you get when you use a search engine in a database). You could search (via checking or unchecking various checkboxes in the search form) the type of action, fire modes, barrel length (longslide, compact, or standard), the calibers you're looking for, etc., all so you could narrow your search much more easily rather than labouriously comparing what you saw to many, many pictures (kind of like if you bring a field guide book on a hiking trip, but still have to search through many pages to identify a plant or animal in question if you're not already familiar with it). I don't know whether this sort of feature is impossible with this wiki at this time, though. --Mazryonh 00:16, 23 March 2012 (CDT)

If you can figure out how to do that, they absolutely!!! Personally, I have no freaking clue how you would do that...
