Tropic Thunder (2008), is a comedy about a harried producer dumping his spoiled movie stars, who think they're filming a Vietnam war Movie, into a real modern day war zone to teach them a lesson. The problem is that they still think they're filming a movie.
Since this film deals with a 'film within a film' a mixing of Vietnam war era and modern weapons is understandable.

AR-15 Sporter II Carbine
Ben Stiller is using a 16" barreled AR-15 Sporter Carbine which is anachronistic for Vietnam (Note: the original AR-15 Carbine was an SP1 (sold between 1978-1985)), so there was no forward Assist on the upper receiver. Stiller's gun is the A1 version, or what Colt called the "Sporter II version" in U.S. sales. The M653 based weapons came after 1973. He should be using an XM177 variation. It may be an homage to the movie "Platoon" though. (Note: The movie "Platoon" was filmed in the Philippines, so the characters of Barnes and Elias used Colt M653P export models. "Tropic Thunder" was filmed in the U.S. - mostly Los Angeles and Hawaii. Their guns are the versions found within the United States).
