James Whitmore was an American stage, film, and television actor. He was the father of actor and director James Whitmore Jr. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1950 for his debut role in the film Battleground and was also nominated for Best Actor in 1976 for his work Give'em Hell, Harry!, a one man show. He is best known to younger audiences for his role of Brooks Hatlen in The Shawshank Redemption.
