The Haenel-Schmeisser MP28/II was designed by Hugo Schmeisser in 1924 and was secretly tested at Kummersdorf by Inspektion fur Waffen und Gerat in 1925. The MP28/II Submachine Gun is nothing more than an improved version of the Bergmann MP18 Submachine Gun. It incorporated the simple box magazine the Schmeisser preferred and a semi-auto and full auto fire control selector. The MP28/II was not manufactured by government arsenals because the Treaty of Versailles restricted German manufacture of these weapons, the C.G.Haenel firm of Suhl, Germany transferred production and sale to Pieper in Belgium and Schwerizerische Industrie Gesellschaft (SIG) in Switzerland. The MP28/II was used by Germany, Belgium, Holland, China, South America, and Japan. The Japanese Type BE as the MP28/II was known as was chambered in 7.63 Mauser and was used by both the Japanese Army and Navy. Both Germany and Japan used this weapon during World War II as a limited standard weapon.
