Shake Hands with the Devil is a 2007 historical drama about Canadian general Romeo Dallaire's experiences as the commander of the ill-fated United Nations Assistance Mission in Rwanda (UNAMIR) during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Directed by Roger Spottiswoode (Under Fire) and starring Roy Dupuis as Lieutenant-General Dallaire, the film is notable for being shot almost entirely in Rwanda, utilizing many of the actual locations where the events depicted occurred.
The following weapons are featured in Shake Hands with the Devil:
Handguns
Colt Python
"Jean-Pierre" (Alex Kamanzi), a Hutu informant for UNAMIR, removes a Colt Python revolver from his waistband before speaking to his UN contact about secret arms caches.
Inglis Hi-Power
General Romeo Dallaire (Roy Dupuis) uses a Inglis Hi-Power as his sidearm throughout the film, using it in one scene to shoot at stray dogs that turn up at the headquarters of UNAMIR.
Colt M1911A1
A M1911A1 pistol is brandished by a Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) rebel commander when the rebels break into an argument with the Hutu government forces that they are negotiating with.
Rifles
Zastava M80
A Zastava M80, distinguishable by its 5.56mm magazine, can be seen among other stockpiled weapons in a photograph that Jean Pierre provides as evidence that a genocide is being planned by Hutu extremists.
Heckler & Koch G3A3
Many UN peacekeepers, RPF rebels and Rwandan soldiers are armed with the Heckler & Koch G3A3. Belgian peacekeepers are erroneously depicted as using the G3A3, even though their standard rifle in 1994 would have been the FN FNC.
Heckler & Koch G3A4
A Heckler & Koch G3A4 is carried by one of the Belgian peacekeepers assigned to protect Rwandan prime minister Agathe Uwiligiyima, which he surrenders after being surrounded by Hutu government forces and ordered to do so by his superiors. One of the Ghanian peacekeepers in General Dallaire's protection detail is later seen with a G3A4 as well.
Zastava M70AB2
The Zastava M70AB2 is seen in the hands of many RPF rebels, and is also used by most of the Rwandan government troops. An Interhamwe militiaman whom General Dallaire encounters also holds a M70AB2.
AKM
One of the Rwandan presidential guards who attacks Prime Minister Uwiligiyima's home at the outset of the genocide is armed with an AKM.
Colt M16A1
Various UN peacekeepers are armed with the M16A1 rifle.
Armalite AR-18
The AR-18 appears in the hands of various soldiers throughout the film, most noticeably in the hands of the French paratroopers who evacuate expatriates from Kigali. The AR-18 is an anachronism, as French troops were armed with FAMAS F1 rifles.
SIG SG 542
Some Rwandan soldiers and French paratroopers hold SIG SG 542 rifles.
FN FNC
At least one UN peacekeeper is seen with a FN FNC rifle when he confronts Interhamwe militiamen that are trying to prevent the UN from transporting Tutsi refugees.
Machine Guns
FN MAG
A Rwandan soldier aboard a EE-9 "Cascavel" armored car points a pintle-mounted FN MAG at General Dallaire when he investigates the fate of the captured Belgian peacekeepers.
DShK
A DShK heavy machine gun is mounted on one of the vehicles escorting General Dallaire.
Other
Mortar
RPF rebels can be seen using a heavy mortar at their base camp outside of Kigali.
