I've never even heard of this one. Of course it could be one of those many Smiths that just wasn't around very long. Is it supposed to be the early L-frame (pre-586/686), or simply a full-lugged K-frame to match the 586/686? : EDIT - Looking through one of my old-ass Smith catalogs (1997, to be exact), it states the Model 581 is the first L-frame so I guess part of my question is answered.
