The Sum of All Fears is the 2002 thriller which is the fourth adaptation of a Tom Clancy Jack Ryan novel. In this film, Ben Affleck stars as analyst Jack Ryan at the beginning of his CIA career as he is assigned to investigate the disappearance of three Russian nuclear scientists.
The following weapons appear in the film The Sum of All Fears:
M4A1 Carbine
The M4A1 carbine appears in the hands of U.S. military personnel several times during the film, first in the hands of guards outside the Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center where President J. Robert Fowler (James Cromwell) is taken during a nuclear attack drill at the beginning of the film, then in the hands of U.S. Marines who rescue President Fowler after his motorcade is hit by the shockwave of a nuclear bomb blast in Baltimore, Maryland. In both instances, the M4A1's are equipped with Trijicon RX01 red dot sights. Since the production was not allowed to bring real weapons from the US to Canada (where the movie was filmed), the Marines' weapons seen during the President's rescue were replicas.
M16A2 Rifle
Some of the Marines that rescue President Fowler can also be seen carrying M16A2 rifles. These also were replica weapons.
M203 Grenade Launcher
In the scene where President Fowler is rescued by the Marines, one of them can be seen with an M203 grenade launcher mounted on his M4A1 carbine. Another Marine can be seen with an M203 mounted on an M16A2 when the President arrives at Andrews Air Force Base to board a National Airborne Operations Center E-4 aircraft.
M1911A1
At one point in the film, Jack Ryan (Ben Affleck) and John Clark (Liev Schreiber) go to Ukraine while searching for a group of missing Russian nuclear scientists, Clark carrying an M1911A1 fitted with Pachmayr grips as his sidearm and an extra one which he gives to Ryan. The two later end up in an armed standoff with a pair of guards, though are able to force the guards to surrender without a shot being fired.
Norinco Type 84S
During the standoff mentioned above, the Ukrainian guards can be seen armed with Norinco Type 84S rifles fitted with AK-74 style muzzle brakes and side-folding stocks, likely to pass as AKS-74 rifles though are easily identified by the hooded front sight and metal 5.56x45mm magazines. After the guards surrender, Ryan and Clark take their rifles and their boots, leaving them unable to persue the protagonists in the snowy terrain.
"Pre-B" CZ 75
Near the end of the film, two Russian FSB agents can be seen chasing down and then killing a member of the group responsible for the bombing of Baltimore and nearly triggering a nuclear war between the United States and Russia, the agents being armed with "Pre-B" CZ 75 pistols.
Phalanx CIWS
The USS John C. Stennis aircraft carrier fires its Phalanx CIWS (Close In Weapons System) when the renegade Russians attack it. The CIWS destroys several cruise missiles fired by the bombers, but at least two manage to hit the carrier, inflicting heavy damage and nearly sinking the vessel.
