Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (translated as "When the Cicadas Cry" and released in the U.S. as "When They Cry") is an anime adaptation of a series of sound novels released by 07th Expansion. The majority of the story takes place in June of 1983 in the rural Japanese village of Hinamizawa. Most of the story arcs shown in the anime are in fact alternate versions of the same events, with the arcs starting out in a similar fashion but ending in drastically different yet equally gruesome ways.
The anime consists of three separate installments: Two television series ("Higurashi no Naku Koro ni" and "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai"), and a five episode OVA ("Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei"). So far, only the first season has received an English release (originally by Geneon and currently by Funimation Entertainment), and the latter two remain unlicensed. All three are included in this article.
Note: Due to the nature of the series, this article may contain some spoilers. See also: Umineko no Naku Koro ni
'The following firearms were seen in the Anime When They Cry and its sequels Higurashi No Naku Koro ni Kai and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei:
Handguns
Tokarev TT-33
Two Tokarev TT-33 pistols are seen; used briefly by a member of the Yamainu.
"First Model" CZ-75
Akasaka uses an early model CZ-75, distinguishable by its short slide rails.
Nambu Model 60
Detective Ooishi carries a Nambu Model 60.
Nambu Type 14
A Japanese solder stationed in the Hinamizawa area during WWII is seen with a Nambu Type 14. He succumbs to the Hinamizawa Syndrome, and attacks his fellow solders with his sidearm.
Smith & Wesson 39
The Yamainu soldiers' standard sidearms are Smith & Wesson 39 pistols. Occasionally these weapons are seen outfitted with sound suppressors, making them Mk.22 "Hush Puppy"s. One S&W 39 is given to Takano by the leader of the Yamainu.
M1911
Takano's weapon of choice is an M1911.
Rifles
AK-47
Shion is seen using an AK-47 that she retrieves from the Sonozaki family armory.
M16A2
The soldiers from the special forces Banken carry M16A2 rifles outfitted with short 20 round magazines.
SVD Dragunov
Kasai, an employee of the Sonozaki family, uses a SVD Dragunov to wound a Yamainu soldier. The handguard is painted black.
Other Weapons
Ithaca 37
Kasai uses a sawed-off Ithaca 37 as his weapon of choice.
MP5SD3
The H&K MP5SD3 is the primary weapon used by the Yamainu soldiers.
RPG-7
A Yamainu solder is briefly seen with a RPG-7 that has been outfitted with a PGO-7.
M79
During a gag episode in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei, Kasai is seen using an (exaggeratedly large) sawed-off M79 grenade launcher loaded with "stun rounds".
Misc
Airsoft Gun
Mion (and occasionally her twin, Shion) is often seen with a generic airsoft pistol in a shoulder holster. She never draws it in the anime, thus making it impossible to determine what gun it is modeled after (although in the "Higurashi - Daybreak" PC game, it is depicted as a Tokarev TT-33). It's only real purpose is to help solidify her "tomboy" image.
