The Thin Red Line is a 1998 American war film which tells a fictional story of United States forces during the Battle of Guadalcanal in World War II. It portrays the men of Charlie Company - Cpt. Staros (Elias Koteas), intelligent, sensitive and reluctant to send his men on dangerous missions, which puts him at odds with the ruthless, ambitious Col. Tall (Nick Nolte), 1st. Sgt Welsh (Sean Penn), cynical and shrewd, Pvt. Bell (Ben Chaplin) whom is heavily devoted to his wife and Pvt. Witt (Jim Caviezel), whom loves his company but hates the army, frequently going AWOL, for which he is sent to a punishment company, but rejoins Charlie during the battle.

Note how the officer second to the right has a mark on his helmet, which indicates he peeled off the insignia - common practice to avoid being targeted by snipers. No other officer in the film wears insignia.
