Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a 1998 film set in the early 1970's, directed by Terry Gilliam. It stars Benicio del Toro as Oscar Z. Acosta (with the alias in the film of Dr. Gonzo) along with Johnny Depp as Hunter S. Thompson (Playing under the pen name of Raoul Duke). It follows Duke and Gonzo as they travel through Las Vegas whilst under the influence of every hallucinogenic drug known to mankind. The film is based on (the real) Hunter S. Thompson's novel of the same name.
Smith and Wesson Model 19
The main gun seen in the film is a Smith & Wesson Model 19, referred to as a ".357" by Duke and Gonzo. It is only fired by Duke in the latter stages of the film. In the novel, the gun is a Colt Python Snub with a beveled cylinder.
Hunting Shotguns
Seen briefly in the hands of three spectators by Duke when he is covering the Mint 400 motorbike race in the desert of Nevada.
XM16E1
Seen briefly in archive news footage of the Vietnam War at various times during the film are intermediate XM16E1 rifles, noted by their chrome lined bolts, forward assists, and three-pronged flash hiders.
M16A1
M16A1 rifles are seen several times in the film.
M60 Machine Gun
An M60 machine gun is seen mounted on a Jeep occupied by slightly confused hunters/Mint gun club members, unaware that they are spectators to the Mint 400 motorcycle race.
